Stephanie Barboza is a first-generation Xicana, born and raised on unceded Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians lands (San Fernando Valley) with a B.A. in Chicanx Studies & a Minor in American Indian Studies from CalState Northridge whose ancestral lands are from Pueblo Coca territory in Jalisco, Mexico.
Creating a Miccailhuitl (Day of the Dead) reflection Zine. Her goal is to support Indigenous youth who are interested in learning more about Miccailhuitl. She strongly believes that at CSUN she learned tremendously from the community and their lived experiences along with her own. She holds the stories of her peers and community above all. Through her time at CSUN she learned the importance of remembering our loved ones during Miccailhuitl by participating in Ofrenda making with her mom since 2018.
Her work is driven by a love to remember and honor those who have transitioned into the spirit world. She has found music, Ofrendas, Altares, and Zines as a way to process her grief. Additionally, she has found Zines to be a beautiful and accessible way of documenting, processing, learning, and sharing knowledge within communities that need it the most.
This gathering is rooted in holding space for folks to collectively process the grief and loss in our communities and encouraging storytelling as a practice.
