Refractions: Contemporary Indigenous Art in Public Space

  • Pico Branch Library/Virginia Avenue Park (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This panel brings together artists and practitioners to reflect on, consider, and uplift the transformational power of Indigenous art in public spaces and the particular concerns around public commissions for First Peoples artists. Featuring Weshoyot Alvitre (Tongva/Scottish), Gerald Clarke (Cahuilla) and Mercedes Dorame (Tongva). Co-moderated by Joel Garcia of Meztli Projects and Patricia Garza as part of the City Hall Mural project series.

PANEL DISCUSSION WILL TAKE PLACE IN:
Thelma Terry Building multipurpose room is on the northwest side of Virginia Avenue Park (same general address: 2200 Virginia Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90405)

These artists' work can be seen in the related exhibition, "Refractions: Contemporary Indigenous Art" at the Annenberg Community Beach House Gallery, opening November 3, 2024 and on view through May 25, 2025.

Weshoyot Alvitre is a Comic book artist, Art Director, Writer and Illustrator who uses pop culture and sci-fi alongside archival materials and tribal knowledge to spark conversations and provide fuller representation of her Indigenous community across colonial narratives. She was born in the Santa Monica Mountains on the property of Satwiwa, a cultural center started by her father Art Alvitre. She grew up close to the land, raised with knowledge that inspires the work she does today. Alvitre has made a conscious choice to work primarily within Native-owned publications and educational avenues, to further support a self-funded narrative on past, present and future Native issues.

Gerald Clarke is a visual artist, educator, tribal leader, and cultural practitioner whose family has lived in the Anza Valley for time immemorial. As an enrolled citizen of the Cahuilla Band of Indians, Gerald lives in the home his grandfather built, circa 1940, on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation and currently oversees the Clarke family cattle ranch. He is currently a Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California Riverside. Clarke has received an Eiteljorg Museum Fellowship for Native American Fine Art and served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Recently, the Palm Springs Art Museum hosted Gerald Clarke: Falling Rock, the first major retrospective of his work. Clarke holds a B.A. in Art from the University of Central Arkansas and the M.A./M.F.A. degrees in Painting/Sculpture from Stephen F. Austin State University located in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Mercedes Dorame is a multi-disciplinary artist who calls on her Tongva ancestry to engage the problematics of (in)visibility and ideas of cultural construction and ancestral connection to land and sky. Born in Los Angeles, California, she received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and her undergraduate degree from UCLA. Dorame’s work is in the permanent collections of the Getty, the Hammer Museum, LACMA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Triton Museum, among others. She is the recipient of grants and fellowships from organizations such as Creative Capital, the Montblanc Art Commission, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She teaches at CalArts in the Photo Media Program.

As part of its Acknowledge and Reframe Together (Reframe) initiative, the City of Santa Monica began a public process in 2022 to consider the meaning, impact and potential responses to the WPA-era mural by Stanton Macdonald-Wright in the lobby of historic City Hall. The City Hall Mural (CHM) project offers a series of civic memory conversations and events exploring the diverse histories and contemporary communities of Santa Monica. These events explore topics in public art, how community stories are told and who is reflected and represented in our civic memory. More information about the Reframe: City Hall Mural project: https://www.santamonica.gov/city-hall-mural.

On View Until December 7, 2024
Closing Reception and Meet & Greet: October 19, 2024 | 6 pm - 9 pm

Come and meet Ciara, Cheyenne, and Skyler Green, chat them up about their work, and enjoy some light drinks and eats.

Through the Eyes of Tokoor is an exhibition featuring sisters Ciara, Cheyenne and Skyler Green, who are Tongva/Chumash young artists working through meztli projects’ Cultural Worker Apprentice program.

Ciara's paintings explore merging symbolic and abstract elements into her style of work portraying elements of the earth and the importance of The Nature as well as touches of femininity and her Native culture. Cheyenne's series of paintings capture the essence of girlhood, nostalgia, and femininity, encapsulating the ambiance and energy she associates with it, and infusing that energy onto canvases for others to share in the experience. Skyler's short film project showcases the essence of growing up in the San Fernando Valley from the perspective of teenage girls coming into adulthood. The series recontextualizes Americana through the overlooked San Fernando Valley girl. Inspired by her cultural heritage and identity as a Chicana, Skyler's photography explores what it means to belong within the Valley's diverse community. With each photo, she evokes the warmth of summer nights spent at local taco stands and the spirit of young women chasing their dreams against the backdrop of palm trees and rooftops.

Tobacco Embers (Exhibition) Opening Reception

meztli projects' exhibition "Tobacco Embers" at Avenue 50's annex is an offering creating reflection points on the reciprocal relationship between peoples and plants.

The title of this exhibition is inspired by smoke as a sacred conduit between here and the spirit world and the plant offerings used in many ancestral traditions of honoring, memorializing, healing, and ascending.

This exhibition holds space for California native plants and their relationship to First Peoples, reminding us that these reciprocal relationships locally and globally are intertwined with liberation and self-determination.

As part of Meztli Projects' work to support Native and Indigenous artists and community members, in 2021 we were able to secure a grant from the California Arts Council to provide IndigenARTS & Wellness a project blending Indigenous practices with mental health and wellness support, using a variety of culturally relevant art-forms to generate dialogue around intergenerational trauma & resiliency, sexual & gendered violence, systemic violence, art as medicine & a healing tool, to process, reflect and work towards individual & collective wellness.

Join us for The Chapter House Indigenous Peoples’ Day Party! On two Saturdays in October, in partnership with The Music Center, The Chapter House is inviting all Angelenos for cultural affirmation and joy among the county’s Indigenous communities to foster greater awareness, respect and understanding of the ongoing cultural contributions of Indigenous people among Los Angeles County residents. These events are by and for Indigenous Peoples, and all are welcome to join!

On Saturday, October 12, Angelenos can shop at a vibrant marketplace on Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center; connect to local Indigenous-serving resource groups, participate in artist-led workshops, and view visual artwork and live performances featuring the rich cultural heritage and contemporary expressions of Indigenous communities.

Stop by our booth for a beading workshop!
